Medvind

The Danish company Medvind (tailwind) is a social work community based in Copenhagen that works to create meaningful, paid employment for people who are outside the regular labor market. Medvind builds on the resources and skills that socially vulnerable individuals possess and gives them the opportunity to develop professional competencies through, for example, bicycle maintenance training, enabling them to return to working life on their own terms.

The purpose is to create stability, self-confidence, and a social network for people in vulnerable life situations, while the company supports well-being, community, and positive life change among participants. By working at Medvind, employees gain not only an income, but also a chance to rebuild structure in their lives, belief in themselves, and social relationships.

Earl, 50, grew up with a violent father and moved out of his home at a very young age. Earl became addicted to drugs early on and has been in and out of rehabilitation for most of his life.

“I’ve really just survived — the whole idea of living wasn’t something I was used to doing. This job has meant that I’ve been sober and clean much more often, which in turn has made my son want to see me more often. It leads to a more conservative way of life, which probably isn’t as bad as people sometimes make it out to be.”

Viv Carstensen, 55, has been marked by a tough childhood with domestic violence, followed by drug addiction and criminal activities. However, in recent years, she has managed to create a more stable daily life. She now lives in supported housing in Amager, Copenhagen, and works at Medvind on a regular basis.

“I don’t want to sell drugs or steal anymore. When I found out that I can handle this job and even get smiles and hugs, I don’t want that other lifestyle anymore. It’s over!”
